Hotel Review: Fairmont Ambassador Seoul (Fairmont Gold Room) - Modern Luxury in Yeouido

The Fairmont Ambassador Seoul made a dramatic entrance into the South Korean market when it opened its doors in 2021, instantly becoming a landmark in the Yeouido financial district. Housed within the striking Parc1 complex designed by the renowned architect Sir Richard Rogers, the property commands attention with its industrial-chic aesthetic and those unmistakable red pillars that run up the side of the building. I decided to book a stay here primarily because I had recently achieved ALL Diamond status, which unlocks complimentary access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge - a significant step up from the usual Platinum benefits.

On my last few trips to Seoul, I stayed at the Le Méridien Seoul, Myeongdong, and while I appreciated the sheer convenience of being in the middle of everything, I found myself getting tired of walking out into a sea of people every single time I left the hotel. I also really enjoyed my stay at the fantastic Andaz Seoul Gangnam previously, but I wanted to try something different this time around. Since I booked a private transfer from Incheon International Airport (ICN), getting to the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul was completely fuss-free, but it is worth noting that the hotel is also incredibly accessible via public transport. The property is connected to Yeouido Station (Line 5 and 9) via an underground passageway through the IFC Mall, which means you can technically get from the airport to the hotel without ever setting foot outside - simply take the AREX to Gongdeok Station, transfer to Line 5, and get off at Yeouido. Upon arrival, I was immediately ushered to the Fairmont Gold Lounge for a private check-in, which was a seamless way to start the stay.

The Fairmont Ambassador Seoul features 326 guest rooms and suites, and it is worth noting that the physical attributes of the non-suite categories are largely identical. Whether you book an entry-level Fairmont Room, a high-floor Fairmont Deluxe Room, or a Fairmont Gold Room, you are looking at the same 41sqm footprint. The primary difference lies in the floor level and, of course, the inclusion of lounge access. As an ALL Diamond member, I was upgraded to a Fairmont Gold Room for this stay. While I certainly appreciated the gesture, it is important to manage expectations since Diamond members already enjoy complimentary breakfast and lounge access by virtue of their status, this upgrade is effectively just a room assignment on a higher floor rather than a move to a physically larger or different room type. That being said, 41sqm is incredibly generous for Seoul standards, and the room feels undeniably luxurious with its warm timber panelling and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Beyond the aesthetics, the room scores very highly on comfort and functionality. Seasoned travellers to Seoul will know that many chain hotels are notoriously strict with their air-conditioning, often capping temperatures or disabling cooling entirely during transitional seasons due to government regulations. Thankfully, the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul gives guests full control over the climate, making it a safe haven for those of us who prefer to sleep in a properly chilled room. This level of comfort extends to the acoustics as well as the soundproofing is impeccable. The room remains pin-drop silent regardless of the time of day, ensuring an uninterrupted and restful night's sleep.

Minibar and TV

The layout of the room at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul is designed to maximise the feeling of space, with the 55-inch HDTV wall-mounted directly across from the bed to keep the lines clean and uncluttered. The television interface is intuitive and responsive, offering a wide selection of satellite channels, but those hoping to cast content from their mobile devices might find it a bit tricky.

ALL Diamond Welcome Amenities

Waiting for me in the room was a generous welcome amenity that went far beyond the standard fruit platter. On the table stood a chilled bottle of sparkling wine alongside a beautifully presented selection of traditional Korean confectionery, featuring tea cookies, fermented glutinous rice snacks, and various hotel confectioneries. While ALL Diamond members are typically treated very well at this property - usually receiving a bottle of wine and a sweet treat - I suspect this elevated spread was a special gesture to mark a birthday celebration.

View from Room
Fairmont Gold Room - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

One of the most striking features of the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul is the commanding view it offers over the Han River and the surrounding financial district. Dominating the immediate skyline are the iconic LG Twin Towers, but if you look beyond the concrete jungle, the view opens up to the river and the city beyond. As my stay coincided with the start of April, I was incredibly lucky to catch the peak of the famous Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival. Yeouido is widely considered to be one of the best spots in Seoul to view the spring blooms, with the streets of Yunjung-ro transforming into a stunning tunnel of pale pink petals, so being at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul was perfect for that.

I was pleased to see that the hotel provides a proper set of glassware which included wine glasses and espresso cups. Coffee drinkers will find a selection of Nespresso capsules replenished daily, while tea lovers are treated to Dilmah’s Silver Jubilee Gourmet range. While the minibar fridge is fully stocked with beer, soft drinks, and juices, do note that these are chargeable items. However, with the Fairmont Gold Lounge just a quick elevator ride away (where free-flowing drinks are available throughout the day), you likely won't need to raid the expensive contents of the fridge.

For those travelling on business, the rooms at Fairmont Ambassador Seoul are well-equipped with a substantial work desk that offers plenty of real estate for a laptop and documents, along with easily accessible power outlets. However, since I was here strictly for a holiday, I happily ignored that corner of the room in favour of the bed. Speaking of which, the sleep quality here is exceptional. The bed leans towards the firmer side (which is exactly how I like it) providing excellent support without feeling like you are sleeping on a plank. Combined with the high thread-count linens and the previously mentioned soundproofing, it made for some of the best sleep I’ve had in Seoul.

Bedside Controls

In terms of functionality, the room is designed with the modern traveller in mind, featuring intuitive bedside panels that put everything within arm's reach. You won’t have to stumble around in the dark looking for switches here; the centralized control panel allows you to adjust the lighting scenes, toggle the "Do Not Disturb" sign, and operate the curtains and blackout blinds with a single touch. As someone who appreciates practical design, I was also relieved to see a universal power outlet and a USB charging port integrated directly into the headboard.

Bathroom

The bathroom is an absolute showstopper, clad in white marble with a striking herringbone pattern that immediately catches the eye. The centrepiece, however, is undoubtedly the deep, freestanding black bathtub that sits dramatically against the lighter stone. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long day out exploring the hip streets of Seongsu-dong, and a much-needed respite after an evening involving copious amounts of soju.

Le Labo Bath Amenities
Fairmont Gold Room - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

Consistent with the brand’s global standards, the bathroom amenities are provided by Le Labo in the signature Rose 31 scent. Like almost all luxury hotels in Seoul now, the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul has moved away from single-use miniatures in favour of large-format pump bottles - a shift driven by South Korea's stringent environmental regulations aimed at drastically reducing plastic waste.

Seating Area
Fairmont Gold Lounge - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

Located on the 3rd floor of the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul, the Fairmont Gold Lounge is the beating heart of the "hotel-within-a-hotel" experience. This exclusive sanctuary is accessible only to guests staying in Gold rooms and suites, as well as ALL Diamond members, providing a private haven away from the busy lobby. The space itself is striking, blending the hotel’s industrial-chic design language with soaring high ceilings and a bold colour palette of deep blues, teals, and mustard yellows. It manages to feel both expansive and intimate, offering plenty of quiet corners for those looking to work or simply unwind with a book.

Evening Cocktails and Canapes
Fairmont Gold Lounge - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

The Evening Cocktails and Canapés service runs from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, and it turned out to be the perfect pit stop before heading out to catch the night lights of the Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival. The beverage spread is respectable, featuring a self-pour bar stocked with basic spirits, alongside essentials like Campari and Kahlua for those looking to mix their own cocktails. It is worth noting that the Fairmont Gold Lounge can get quite busy during this window (especially on weekends as the hotel is popular amongst locals as well), so arriving before 5:30 PM is advisable if you want to secure a prime window seat to watch the sun go down over the city.

Craft Beer
Fairmont Gold Lounge - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

For those who appreciate a local brew, the lounge stocks a rotating selection of Korean craft beers - a refreshing change from the usual commercial lagers. However, I couldn't help but feel that the hotel missed a trick by not showcasing Korea's booming craft soju scene. The Le Méridien Seoul, Myeongdong does a fantastic job of this in their lounge, and it would have been great to see a similar nod to artisanal spirits here. That said, I found myself sticking to the sparkling wine for the evening. While it wasn't a top-shelf Champagne, it offered just enough of a buzz to make the evening stroll that much more enjoyable.

Complementing the drinks is a robust selection of hot and cold canapés that leans heavily towards the substantial side. Unlike some club lounges that offer little more than nuts and cheese, the Fairmont Gold Lounge puts out a proper spread of hot dishes that rotates daily. During my visit, the buffet featured a flavourful crab fried rice, tender braised beef, and a pasta dish, alongside a soup station. The quality of the food is excellent - comparable to what you would find in the main restaurant rather than an afterthought. Those with a sweet tooth are also well catered for, with a selection of pastries and warm Portuguese egg tarts to round off the evening.

Seating Area at Breakfast
Spectrum - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

One of the key privileges of booking a Fairmont Gold Room (or holding ALL Diamond status) at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul is the luxury of choice when it comes to breakfast. Guests can choose to enjoy a private, continental-style breakfast in the calm of the Fairmont Gold Lounge or head down to Spectrum on the 5th floor for the full international buffet experience. On my first morning, having indulged a little too much the night before, I opted for the sanctuary of the lounge for a quieter, later start. However, for the rest of my stay, I made a beeline for Spectrum. The spread here is nothing short of spectacular and is easily one of the best hotel breakfasts in Seoul. That being said, a word of warning: Spectrum is incredibly popular, especially with domestic travellers. If you are visiting on a weekend, I highly recommend heading down before 8:30 AM; otherwise, you might find yourself standing in line for a table.

Sparkling Wine at Breakfast
Spectrum - Fairmont Ambassador Seoul

For those who believe that a holiday breakfast is incomplete without a little morning tipple, you will be pleased to know that Spectrum at Fairmont Ambassador Seoul offers free-flowing sparkling wine. While the setup with the adjacent carafes of orange juice suggests that guests are expected to mix their own Mimosas, I personally saw no reason to dilute the experience. After all, fruit juice is full of unnecessary sugar, and being a health-conscious traveller, I decided to be a purist and stick strictly to the bubbles - it's practically a diet drink if you think about it. The food offering is equally indulgent, featuring a sprawling layout that covers everything from roast meats and a live noodle station to fresh bakeries and Korean staples.

What truly sets Spectrum apart is not just the sheer variety, but the premium quality of the offerings. It is rare to find a breakfast buffet that executes high-end dishes with such precision. A particular highlight for me was the Peking duck station - crisp skin, succulent meat, and pancakes made to order - a dish usually reserved for lunch or dinner service at other establishments. I was also pleasantly surprised to find bamboo steamers filled with fresh steamed seafood, a luxurious deviation from the standard frozen dim sum fare often found in club lounges. However, the real showstopper for me was the fruit section. If you know anything about South Korean agriculture, you know they take their fruit seriously. The seasonal strawberries were incredibly sweet and juicy, and the grapes were firm and flavourful.

Bathroom

The Fairmont Ambassador Seoul sits in a unique position for leisure travellers. Yeouido is undeniably the financial heart of the city, meaning you won't step out into the immediate chaos and neon lights of Myeongdong or Hongdae. For first-time visitors who want to be in the thick of the action, this might feel a little detached. However, if you are like me and appreciate a bit of peace and quiet after a day of sensory overload, this location is a blessing and with the subway connected directly to the complex, the rest of Seoul is never far away. For ALL Diamond members, the property delivers exceptional value, with the Fairmont Gold Lounge providing a genuine sanctuary and a solid evening happy hour that makes the status chase worthwhile. Although I will sadly be dropping to ALL Platinum status at the end of the year, the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul remains high on my list. While the cash rates can be steep, I would not hesitate to book a return stay if a significant sale pops up.
