Hotel Review: Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore (Executive Suite)
When I checked out the brand new Club Rooms and Club Lounge at the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore last year, I fell in love with the property - it is tastefully done, affordable and the location is pretty decent (especially when you consider how much you are paying). With other luxury hotels like The St. Regis Singapore and Regent Singapore at the doorstep of the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore, it is pretty shocking to see this hotel charging only half of what the rest outside are charging.
Following a massive renovation and refurbishment process to be in line with the Hotel Jen brand, the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore has created a space where I have grown to love. In fact, I like it so much that I actually take a slow stroll down to the property when I am in need of coffee in Orchard - Jen's Kitchen On-the-go. Firstly, the place looks pretty amazing and slightly quirky (in a good way!) and secondly, the coffee quality unlike most hotels, is actually comparable to a decent cafe. Lastly, all prices here are nett prices - that's right, no more adding service tax and GST to the final sum!
I got a Piccolo Latte (S$4) from Jen's Kitchen On-the-go and was pretty impressed by the quality of it. This is also where I tend to get some work done if I am in town since complimentary WiFi is provided throughout the property. If you are looking for something light (or heavy!) to eat, Jen's Kitchen On-the-go also serves a variety of food that ranges from salads and wraps to even dishes like Nasi Goreng!
I checked out one of the newly redesigned Executive Suite (entry-level suite) at the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore one weekend and I really liked it - especially when you find out how little they are charging for a place like that in a located like Tanglin! While the Executive Suite is just 50sqm on paper, it certainly feels like a lot more since there is ample space to lounge around with plenty of simple pleasures (the way Jen advocates!) for a traveling family or business person.
Firstly, the living room comes with a comfortable sofa, a small bar area and a chair by the window for you sit on and ponder about life. I really appreciate the ability to move the table and chairs around so you can customise the space to suit your needs. In fact, Hotel Jen Tanglin is running a Girls' Party Staycation package which allows up to a maximum of 8 guests up to 11PM and 4 guests to stay the night. Sure, guys can opt for the package too but you'll probably be uninterested in the gel manicure set that comes with the room.
For added privacy, you may choose to close the sliding doors to the bedroom so you can host your guests (if any) outside in the living area. That being said, the Executive Suite does not come with a powder room though so your guests will still have to walk through the bedroom to get to the bathroom - or you can always be mean and send them downstairs. There is quite a healthy selection of satellite and cable channels (radio too!) on TV so you can be certain of being entertained.
The small pantry area in the Executive Suite comes with a huge "SMEG" fridge that is stocked with complimentary refreshments - there is also a ton of space for you to throw in all the goodies that you may choose to purchase from the supermarket just next door at Tanglin Mall. For those of you who are always hungry at night, there is also a microwave in the room - go forth and make popcorn! I also really appreciate the existence of a Nespresso machine (even though you do get access to the Club Lounge (more on this later!).
The Executive Suites in the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore has a lot of USB charging points and universal plugs. Even as a Singaporean who obviously do not need the universal plugs as much as say, a traveller from Australia, I really find value in these thoughtfully-placed charging points. I personally travel with a lot of devices that consume energy like how I consume alcohol during happy hour (which is a lot!) so the 6 USB charging ports and 6 universal plugs are definitely god-sent. For some reason too, I ended up doing quite a bit of work here at this small bar area by the living room (instead of the work desk in the bedroom).
The bedroom in the Executive Suite really resembles a regular club at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore but this is a good thing because the beds are incredibly comfortable! The bedroom comes with a small work desk where you may choose to work from (but seriously, just head out to the living room!) and an attached bathroom. The wall murals may also differ from suites to suites.
You will find another TV in the bedroom of the Executive Suite so if you are traveling with family, you do not actually have to be stuck watching children shows. There is also a small area for hanging your clothes as well as a separate wardrobe so you can be quite comfortable here if you are thinking about spending a week or two - you should definitely consider signing-up for the Golden Circle program then!
The bathroom of the Executive Suite is pretty basic and you will not find a tub here. In fact, as far as I know, only the highest-category suite (Premier Suite) comes with a bath tub. With that being said, you simply cannot argue with that considering how much you will be paying. Bathroom amenities are the same throughout the different Hotel Jens across the world but strangely enough the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore seem to have stopped providing the little bags that come with them.
Apart from enjoying the beautiful space in the Executive Suite, you will obviously get the rest of the perks from staying in a Hotel Jen - complimentary WiFi (always!), single-wash laundry service (clothes washed and folded at one single price!) and the genuine (or might I say, "Jen-uine") service from the ever-friendly staff.
As part of my Golden Circle elite benefits, I got all my previously-indicated welcome amenities delivered to the room - I've never had a stay where this was never fulfilled so thumbs up to the Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts properties that have adhered to this strictly!
As a Suite guest at the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore, you will also enjoy access to the exclusive Club Lounge with a range of benefits:
- Extended weekday breakfasts from 6.30am until 11:00am
- "Jenerous" weekend brunches from 6.30am until 12:00pm
- Mid-afternoon culinary treats
- Cocktail hour from 5:00pm until 7.30pm
- Open from 6:00am until 10:00pm. Accessible on a 24-hour basis with a room key
- Exclusive check-in, reception and concierge
- Pressing of one piece of clothing per stay
- Business centre facilities
You will have the choice of either having a private breakfast at the Club Lounge (which I personally do prefer for this property) or a more extensive buffet spread at the recently-refurbished J65 restaurant (which also serves one of the cheapest Champagne Brunches in Singapore!) downstairs.
The Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore continues to impress me with its wallet-friendly accommodation options and genuine service. Considering how great the location is for both properties (Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore too!) and more importantly, at the price point that they are both at, it is really a no-brainer for travellers who are looking for affordable yet comfortable hotels. If you tend to enjoy a drink or two in the evening, I would really recommend booking the Club Rooms over the regular rooms since they are often located on a much higher floor (which gives a nicer view) and you will have access to the Club Lounge which serves up pretty decent food and drinks.
