Cheapest Perrier-Jouët Sunday Brunch at J65 (Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore)
UPDATE (15 January 2016): Sunday Brunch at J65 is now S$128 NETT (instead of S$138 previously)
Everyone loves a good Sunday Brunch (especially when Champagne is involved) and the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore has quite recently jumped on the bandwagon in Singapore by offering the city's most affordable Perrier-Jouët Sunday Brunch at J65 for only S$138 NETT - that's right, no more pesky taxes to add on to this nice amount. First things first, what and where exactly is J65?

Following an extensive refurbishment and redesign process, J65 occupies the space where Cafebiz used to seat. The name, which is inspired by Singapore's very own international dialing code (+65) is Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore's new all-day dining restaurant that serves up delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you have been to the previous space, you'd definitely notice how beautiful the brand new J65 actually is - vibrant colours and a design that is reminiscent of a lively weekend market (the kind you'd find overseas not the wet markets of course!).
Here's something that you probably do not know! Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore is one of the only hotels in Singapore to offer NETT pricing across all their F&B outlets - great for people with mild OCD like me with the constant burning need to round every number up. Seriously though, I think that the hotel is taking a step in the right direction and every other hotel should follow suit.
While different options are available in Singapore for the perfect Sunday Brunch, J65 brings to Singapore one of the most affordable Champagne Brunches (and definitely the most affordable one with free-flowing Perrier-Jouët) yet at just S$138 NETT. To put things into perspective, the Sunday Brunch at the Grand Hyatt Singapore (which serves up free-flowing Perrier-Jouët too) is at S$148++ per person (approx. S$175 NETT). Similarly, the Connoisseur Sunday Brunch Experience at St. Regis Singapore (with free-flowing “R” de Ruinart Brut NV) will set you back S$195++ per person (S$230 NETT). Therefore, the Sunday Brunch at J65 (Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore) is truly a steal - especially if you are a thirsty diner like me! A non-alcohol version is also available at just S$98 NETT per person.
The cold section and raw bar of the J65 is pretty similar to what you would expect to find at every other decent Sunday Brunch in Singapore - lobster, prawns, yabbies, shellfish, oysters, sashimi and a brunch of other crustaceans. It is important to remember that Hotel Jen Tangling Singapore belongs to the wider Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group and therefore chances are that the ingredients used here are potentially the same (in my personal opinion) as the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore but at a fraction of the price.
I honestly think that the best things to eat during a Sunday Brunch are Champagne and seafood (in that order of priority). Everything else in the buffet spread should just complement the two main components of the dining experience.
Meat-lovers are also not left out from the fun! In fact, I actually thought that the meats were done better. While for some reason, my lamb was no longer hot when I got it (maybe it has to do with the fact that I only got down to the Sunday Brunch 90 minutes after it has started), it was actually pretty delicious and cooked rather well. The roast chicken too was my personal favourite and it reminded me a little of that perfectly cooked meats from The Carvery at Park Hotel Alexandra.
Vegans will probably shudder at the sight of this but the Signature Chicago Bull Leg is actually quite a sight to behold. Cooked painstakingly over a period of 14 hours, the result is an almost-prehistoric presentation of meat that is of the right tenderness. With that being said however, I thought that the taste was slightly underwhelming and that sauces were required to bring out the flavours of the meat.
If for some reason you are craving for Asian food, there is a station where you can get your fill of chicken, roast pork and all that jazz. In fact, the chicken rice here comes in the shape of little balls and that chili to go with it is definitely something worth trying.
Children at J65's Sunday Brunch will definitely love the ice-cream bar where you can create your very own version of happiness in a cup. Choose which flavour of ice-cream, then your sauces and finally your toppings.
Apart from the usual ice-cream bar (which reminds me of Makan @ Jen at Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore), you will also find a dedicated counter that is filled with local cakes (or kuehs) as well as desserts. They are pretty decent so be sure to leave some space for these delicious and pretty-looking sweets.
The Sunday Brunch at J65 (Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore) runs every Sunday from 12PM to 3PM so be sure to get in early to have your fill of food and alcohol. If you book online, you will receive 15% off your total dining bill - this essentially brings down your Sunday Brunch experience at J65 from S$138 NETT to just S$117.30 NETT. To save even more, charge it to your ANZ Optimum World MasterCard to bring down this already-discounted price to just S$111.50 NETT (almost a 20% discount!).
