Hotel Review: Dorsett Singapore (Splash Room)
I visited the Dorsett Singapore last year and stayed in one of their newly-appointed Loft Rooms. Located just three minutes walk away from the Outram Park MRT Station, the Dorsett Singapore offers affordable accommodation in a charming location. If you have been putting off the idea of visiting the restaurants (and bars) along Keong Saik just because it is slightly inconvenient, this hotel would be an excellent place to spend a weekend in - particularly because everything is just a short stroll away.
The Dorsett Singapore isn't about a luxurious weekend getaway where you just spend all your waking (and sleeping) hours in the room or at the club lounge. For starters, this 10-storey hotel does not sell any club rooms (and hence, do not have a club lounge). What it does possess though, is a blend of modern architecture (that is fairly evident through its full glass building facade) and a touch of quirkiness.
I had the opportunity of staying in a Splash Room at the Dorsett Singapore to review their Singapore National Day Staycation package. Most of the hotels within Singapore have been fairly aggressive with promoting their SG50 staycation packages (which seem like a bit of a hit-or-miss to me) and therefore, I was personally quite interested to check out what Dorsett Singapore has to offer. As mentioned in my previous post, the National Day Staycation package (valid only for stays between 7-10 August 2015) at Dorsett Singapore will come with the following inclusions:
- Daily S$50 OFF Best Available Rate
- Free daily buffet breakfast for 2 persons
- Free Minibar daily
- Free WiFi and internet access
- (Optional) 50% OFF charge on upgrade to Splash Room or Loft Room
The Splash Room is approximately 25 sqm in size and it comes with a city view - in fact my room looks out to the swimming pool and it's quite a relaxing sight (photo to come later!). The room also comes with a 40" LED Television that is stocked with a selection of international and cable TV channels. More importantly, you will find one of those signature posturepedic (king-sized) mattresses to ensure you get a good night's sleep.
Similar to the Loft Room that I stayed previously, the bathroom comes with a pretty interesting design where you are able to access your clothes from the comfort of the bathroom (without having the brave the cold from the room). The most obvious difference though will be the inclusion of a sturdy and massive bathtub. You will also find a separate shower area that comes with a rain-shower that is especially useful after you have been out exploring the area.
Bathroom amenities were provided by an in-house brand and basic hygiene amenities like toothbrush and toothpaste were also available so you don't have to worry about an impromptu stay! In any case, even if you do forget something, the hotel is conveniently located to a number of supermarkets and convenience stores.
Remember too that if you opt for the Singapore National Day Staycation Package, you will have the entire minibar (which includes canned beer, drinks, juices, water and even instant noodles!) for your consumption with no extra charges!
You may be lucky enough to get a view of the pool from the Splash Room - otherwise, ask nicely while checking-in and you may just get lucky!
Daily buffet breakfast for two is also included in the Singapore National Day Staycation Package at Pappasan. Breakfast at Pappasan is pretty simple but it has definitely improved quite drastically since my last visit - in fact, the egg station (located outside the restaurant) is a really nice addition to the buffet!
Apart from the usual suspects at a buffet breakfast, there was also a pretty decent 'live' cooking station that serves up Prawn Noodles. However if you do decide against having breakfast in the hotel, you may choose to check out Tong Ah Eating House for some decent old-school kaya toast and coffee. You are also minutes away from a number of cafes if you like your Western brunch-sort-of-thing.
If you are planning on a weekend at the Dorsett Singapore, I would highly recommend the Splash Room (that I stayed in this time) if tubs are important to you or the Loft Room (which i stayed previously) if you like the loft-living concept. Having 50% off the upgrade-fee into one of these rooms is a truly unique opportunity and one that you should take advantage of! Besides, having the opportunity to raid the minibar (including the instant noodles) is an amazing experience and one that you will truly appreciate when you're lazing around in your bed (or in the huge tub).
