Are Marriott Rewards Platinum Elite Members Still Getting Suite Upgrades?
The combined loyalty program of Marriott International properties will soon be relaunching under the new Marriott Bonvoy program name. Ever since the loyalty programs merged back in August 2018, I have not gotten a single suite upgrade (despite being Platinum Elite) on stays where the suites were available at check-in.
In December 2018 when I stayed at The Westin Singapore, a Junior Suite was available but I was upgraded into a Club Room instead (which is a little bit of a joke since Platinum members get access to the Club Lounge anyway). Last month, when I booked a FHR rate at The St. Regis Singapore on a quiet weekend where the St. Regis Suite (as well as two lower room categories) was available, I was only given a one-category upgrade into a Grand Deluxe room. Just this weekend, I was given a one-category room upgrade at the Four Points by Sheraton, Singapore when the lead-in suite category was available at check-in. Obviously getting upgraded is not a 'right' per se and these are accorded so long they are available at the time of check-in but honestly, it is starting to feel a little bit ridiculous (especially if I have to demand for it). There is a reason why I spend at least 50 nights each year with Marriott properties and why I choose to book direct but if this benefit is not enforced, then perhaps it is time to look for a different loyalty program in year 2020.
I am certainly interested to see whether some of these benefits will be nerfed once Marriott Bonvoy launches. I have a feeling that suite upgrades will be reserved for Titanium and Ambassador members only but let's see what happens - do let me know if you have been receiving suite upgrades lately too!
