Hotel Review: Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara (One Bedroom Suite) - Property in Self-sufficient Neighbourhood with Great Dining Options
Mont Kiara is an affluent suburb in Kuala Lumpur and even though it might be a good distance away from popular haunts like Bukit Bintang and KLCC, it is an extremely self-sufficient neighbourhood with plenty of great food options. Mont Kiara is a popular choice amongst expatriates but it is not commonly considered by tourists as it is further away from the usual spots. I typically stay at the Alila Bangsar (which is really convenient if you wish to take advantage of the LRT) or the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur (which has an excellent Grand Club Lounge) when I visit Kuala Lumpur, but since both properties are at least a 20-minute drive away from a spin studio which I frequent, I decided to check out the relatively new Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur on one stay.

The Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara is located in Mont Kiara, next to the 163 Retail Park which is home to many great restaurants and a large supermarket, Jaya Grocer. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara, and the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur (which is located near KLCC) are both 70km away which should take you approximately an hour by car in favourable traffic conditions. Getting from the airport to a city hotel takes quite a bit of time and that is my usual frustration when visiting Kuala Lumpur as the airport is really far away. If you do not mind flying on a propeller plane and departing from Seletar Airport, you may consider Firefly as it will take you directly to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB). In comparison to KLIA, the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport is a lot closer to the city and it is only 21km and 29km away from the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur and Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur respectively.
My flight out of Singapore was pretty late in the evening and the traffic was quite bad when I got into Kuala Lumpur so the journey from the airport took me almost 90 minutes. When I finally got to the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara, I was informed that even though my reservation was made for the lead-in room category, Den King Bed, it has been accorded a courtesy upgrade into a One Bedroom Suite in recognition of my Globalist status. This is a two-category upgrade and as you may already know, Globalists are not entitled to any upgrade when staying at a Hyatt House or Hyatt Place property so this is above and beyond what is required.
The One Bedroom Suite that I was assigned comes with 50sqm of living space (which is 20sqm larger than the Den King Room which I had initially booked) and it has a separate living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, as well as a bedroom. This is my very first time staying in a Hyatt House-branded property and I honestly did not know what to expect - the layout of the room reminded me of the Residence Inn Tampa Downtown which I stayed in last year but this is obviously a lot newer and nicer. Even though I typically prefer a hotel over a serviced residence and I have no need for a kitchen (since I do not cook), the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara is actually quite nice, and I can definitely see the appeal of these properties especially for those traveling with children.
The lead-in room category at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara does not come with a fully-equipped kitchen so if that is something that you want or require, you should consider booking the One Bedroom Suite (which is only approximately MYR 100 more per night on average). The suite that I was assigned to came with a full-size refrigerator (with a freezer) and a microwave oven which makes it convenient for travellers wanting to prepare their own meals. Most transient guests will probably see no value in these but as I have mentioned earlier, Hyatt House properties cater to a different group of travellers and as the name suggests, it offers the convenience of having a home (and thus, the kitchen) while traveling abroad.
As you would expect, crockeries are provided in the suite for up to four adults and this makes it suitable for those entertaining guests, or those traveling with children. If I am not mistaken, the sofa in the living room can also be converted into a sofa bed if required. There is also a dishwasher located under the sink in the kitchen so you do not even have to worry about cleaning your dishes - I am not sure whether dishwashing tablets are provided but I am sure that is something you can either request from the hotel, or purchase from the grocer next door.
The Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara provides everything you can reasonably expect in a serviced residence as far as a fully-functioning kitchen is concerned. You will find the pots and pans located in one of the drawers, as well as a full set of cutlery for your convenience. While I did not actually cook during my stay, having proper cutleries meant that I could enjoy my takeaway meals a lot more comfortably. There are plenty of great restaurants in the area and while nothing beats having a meal in the restaurant physically, I did take advantage of the property’s proximity to Choo's Kitchen by Village Roast Duck (which is probably my favourite Roast Duck in Kuala Lumpur) to get dinner since it was already pretty late upon arrival.
Unlike the Ascott Star KLCC Kuala Lumpur that I stayed in a couple of months ago, the One Bedroom Suite at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara did not come with a coffee machine. They did provide some freeze-dried coffee sachets and tea bags from Lipton but obviously, these are extremely basic and I would personally just get coffee from a nearby cafe instead. If you are desperate for an espresso-based coffee, there is a Starbucks located downstairs but if you want something a little more artisanal, VCR Stacks across the road is probably where I would head to personally - they also do a fantastic cheese toastie but that’s a different story altogether.
You will also find a 3-zone induction hob in the One Bedroom Suite at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara. This makes it easy for those looking to whip up a meal while staying at the property. One of the things that I really wish serviced residences provide is cooking oil as I do not wish to commit to an entire bottle of EVOO from just wanting to cook a single meal. While it may sound pretty unimportant, this is actually a huge deterrence for me when staying at a property like that.
Personally, I try to get at least one proper workout in per day even when I am traveling - I go to a spin studio in Mont Kiara and it is only a short 5-10 minute drive away from the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara. The roads can get quite congested in Kuala Lumpur (especially during peak hours) and therefore, a short 20-minute drive may somehow end up as an hour’s drive if you do not plan your departure timing property. Having a washing machine in the apartment makes it really convenient for me to wash my workout outfits on the go - this is fantastic as I typically do have to send them in for laundering while staying at a hotel. Washing powder and liquid is not provided by default at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur and I am not sure whether you can request for it but this is definitely something that I will check when I stay there again next month.
There are no grand gestures for Globalists as far as welcome amenities are concerned but as I have mentioned earlier, on-property perks are quite limited at Hyatt House-branded hotels. I received a plate of fruits as well as a welcome note and I am quite certain that this is the same for all guests, regardless of their membership tiers.
On the dining table is also where you will find a distilled water dispenser which is a good way to reduce the use of single-use plastics. I tend to take a bottle of water along with me for workouts (or when I plan on staying out for a few hours) but this meant that I had to purchase a bottle of water separately which is a minor inconvenience but obviously not a dealbreaker. Water is apparently potable in Kuala Lumpur but it is great that the Hyatt House provides an option like that for more risk-adverse travellers.
I really live the living room of the One Bedroom Suite - while the TV can be slightly larger, it is actually a really cozy spot to hangout throughout the day. There is a small work desk located within the bedroom but I actually prefer to work from the living room and the dining room instead. You will find a small selection of cable and satellite channels on the TV but unfortunately, you will not be able to stream your content easily via the WiFi network.
The bedroom of the One Bedroom Suite is of a good size and it comes with a plush king-sized Hyatt Grand Bed. There is also a small wardrobe located within the bedroom and this is also where you will find a safety box for your valuables as well as an iron. While the bed is pretty comfortable, I did find the bedding to be quite rough (in comparison to the Grand Hyatt) but I did have a good night’s rest in any case.
Located next to the side of the bed is where you will find the lighting controls, a digital clock, a phone, as well as a USB charging port for you to charge your mobile devices while you sleep. There is also another TV inside the bedroom if you would like to enjoy some shows in bed but honestly, the selection of content is quite limited.
As mentioned previously, there is a small work desk located in the bedroom next to the window. While this may be a conducive spot to get work done during the day, I do prefer to work from the living room and dining room instead since it feels a little less claustrophobic - it also helps that you are not facing a wall. The WiFi at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara is free for all in-house guests and it works well without a hitch.
Most of the rooms here at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara do not come with a bathtub unfortunately but the bathroom has just about everything else that you will probably need. Some personal amenities are provided upon request (e.g. disposable razors) but as I have mentioned earlier, there is a supermarket located next to the hotel where you will be able to pick-up the things you need.
There is not much to look out to from the rooms and suites at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara as the property is surrounded by residential towers mostly. I do however appreciate the fact that both the bedroom as well as the living room have their own windows for natural daylight to come in.
The One Bedroom Suite that I stayed in also came with a small balcony (which was connected to the living room) with seating for two adults. However, the door leading out to the balcony was locked during my stay and apparently, you can request for the doors to be unlocked if that is something you prefer. As I have mentioned earlier, my stay at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara was only for a night and therefore, I did not wish to bother anyone since it requires someone coming up physically to unlock the door with an actual key.
Complimentary breakfast is provided for all guests at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara who is staying on an eligible rate. Now if you have been reading my hotel reviews, you know that I rarely complain about breakfast - a solid cup of coffee is usually what I need but man the breakfast is really terrible. Breakfast is served at Gallery Kitchen from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM on weekdays, and 6:30 AM to 10:#0 AM on weekends. There is an extremely limited selection of hot and cold food available but more importantly, the quality of food is pretty abysmal.
There is nothing much to complain about since it is complimentary for all guests (I cannot imagine the hotel charging for this) and honestly the silver lining in this is that you will actually get to explore the area a little bit more. There is a small cereal section, a coffee machine, and also scrambled eggs and toast on the side if you are really reluctant to head out but seriously, just do yourself a favour since there are plenty of options in the vicinity.
VCR Stacks which is located across the road from the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara opens at 8:00 AM daily, and it is a great spot for you to pick up proper coffee and toasties if you are feeling peckish in the morning.
Travellers staying at the Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara will appreciate the large outdoor swimming pool located on the top floor of the property. There is also a fitness centre located on the same level but it was rather busy during my visit so I have decided to give it a miss on this stay - I will however be returning to this property soon, and will try to check out the gym then. Located next to the swimming pool is where you will find an alfreso area for guests to lounge about - there is no poolside service for food and drinks but you can probably bring your own if you need any snacks.
Not all of the guest rooms here at the hotel come with a laundry machine (the lead-in room category does not) and even if your suite comes with one, you might find an industrial-sized laundry machine to suit your needs better if you do not wish to purchase any laundry liquid during the stay.
The Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont Kiara is not a direct competitor to large business hotels like the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur - it serves a different target audience but while the property caters to guests staying for a longer period of time, it does appeal to me as I do like the Mont Kiara area quite a fair bit. I have been to Kuala Lumput at least ten times since 2022 and I have seen what I need to see in the city - I typically go back to catch up with friends, earn my room nights, and work out so having a property in Mont Kiara actually works to my advantage. The property also has really affordable two-bedroom suites that go for under MYR 550 a night on average - this is a fantastic option for larger families or bigger groups of friends who are traveling together.

TRIBE Living Bangkok Sukhumvit 39 is a great value choice for budget-conscious travelers but its slightly longer walk from Phrom Phong BTS Station may make it less convenient compared to more accessible (but pricier) options in the area.
