From 15 May 2025: Use Your American Express Card for MRT and Bus Rides in Singapore
Starting 15 May 2025, American Express contactless cards - including those issued by third-party partners worldwide - can be used for public transport fare payment across Singapore’s MRT and bus networks. This long-awaited move, announced jointly by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and American Express, adds another layer of flexibility and value to your daily transit.
For years, Visa and Mastercard users have enjoyed the ease of SimplyGo, tapping their cards or mobile wallets directly at MRT gates or bus readers without worrying about topping up. With American Express joining the party, American Express loyalists and rewards chasers now gain that same convenience, but do note that Membership Rewards points or cashback will not be awarded on these transactions.
Visiting Singapore? Your foreign-issued American Express card can now be added to your mobile wallet and used across the city’s extensive train and bus systems. That means no more fuss with tourist passes or transit cards - just tap and ride. This is a particularly appealing move for frequent business travellers and leisure visitors who already use American Express for hotel stays, dining, and shopping.
Planning to get an American Express card? Using any of the following MGM referral links will earn you either bonus MR Points or additional statement credits, depending on the card that you will be applying for:
