Hotel Review: PARKROYAL on Beach Road (Premier Room)
There are three PARKROYAL hotels in Singapore and together with the other two Pan Pacific hotels in Singapore, they participate in the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) program. Even though many travellers have criticised the GHA program for being inconsistent, I personally feel that the benefits are highly consistent in the Singapore properties at least. Last year I checked out one of PARKROYAL on Beach Road's Orchid Club Premier King rooms and have found it to be of excellent value (click HERE to check out my previous review of the Orchid Club Premier room). This year the PARKROYAL on Beach Road has unveiled their newly refurbished Premier Rooms. Having found a really good rate on an OTA, I decided to give the Premier Rooms a go during the Lunar New Year break (particularly because I did not have any visiting to do too).
Even though the hotel was running at 100% occupancy, I managed to check-in and get the room of my choice despite arriving early at 11am. GHA Black (which can be earned with 30 eligible nights a year) gives you a 9am check-in and 6pm late check-out where available and I have found this benefit to be excellent especially for staycations. GHA Black generally also gets you a double-upgrade (upon availability) and in the case you do get upgraded into a Club room, club benefits are generally not given to you (unlike in Hilton or other larger hotel loyalty programs). GHA Black members will also get a S$10 Minibar credit which I believe is a one-off amenity.
The Premier King room (35 sqm) is slightly smaller when compared to the Orchid Club Premier room (42 sqm) and you will not have a personal balcony or a bath tub in this room type. Even though I personally value a bath tub highly during a staycation, I think the newly refurbished rooms are truly a breath of fresh air. While the PARKROYAL on Beach Road has a good location, it is starting to show signs of age and the dated decor of the previous Premier room was starting to fall behind in terms of competition.
Those of you who have been to the PARKROYAL on Pickering will find the Premier room here to be relatively familiar with the signature nature-inspired colour scheme. At first glance, you will notice that the Premier rooms look absolutely nothing like the old room types before refurbishment (in a very good way). The room comes with an executive work desk and complimentary internet access (remember you also always get complimentary internet access with the GHA membership).
The Minibar comes stocked with some beverages and beers with ample space for you to store your own food/drinks. Cold beverages are at S$4.50++ a can and a can of Tiger Beer will set you back S$9.50++ so be sure to BYO.
Power outlets are readily available around the room and even by the bed so you can be sure that your power-hungry devices will never run out of juice. There are multiple light controls and buttons which are located by the bed to allow you to obtain the right dimness (or brightness). If you are a fan of natural lighting like I am then you will be happy to know that the full-length windows will bask the room in a warm natural glow. There's no better way to lounge spend the afternoon than to laze by the modern chaise lounge set by the bed.
The view from my room on Level Two wasn't particularly spectacular but it was quiet and despite being just a level above the street, you will not be getting any noise pollution from ground level at all (and trust me, I am a light sleeper).
As mentioned earlier, the new Premier rooms do not have a bath tub. That being said, you will find a tastefully appointed shower area in the beautifully refurbished bathroom. Bath amenities are provided by the award-winning St. Gregory Spa which was voted as the Best Luxury Hotel Spa in 2011.
Instead of getting the 50ml bottles like you do in the Orchid Club Premier rooms however, you will receive smaller 30ml bottles in the normal non-club rooms. In case you run out, just ask a friendly housekeeper in the corridor!
The new Premier rooms are absolutely beautiful and for the price point that they are at, I simply cannot think of some place I'd rather be. Check out the SG50 Staycation package which comes with complimentary breakfast (for two) and S$50 in-house credit (cumulative daily) for selected hotel services and dining outlets.
