BOC Zaobao Credit Card offers up to 20% Cash Rebate (Promotional) - UnionPay Credit Card

About a week ago, I saw the new Bank of China (BOC) Zaobao Credit Card and I almost choked on the water that I was drinking. This sounds almost as ludicrous as the co-branded card with Secret Recipe and Diners Club (there's one for Long Beach too!) and upon further investigation the new BOC Zaobao (which is essentially a Chinese newspaper in Singapore in case anyone was wondering) Credit Card apparently offers up to 20% cash rebates!

If you ignore the inflated amount that every credit card claims to give on petrol spend, here are the percentage cash rebates that you get from the BOC Zaobao Credit Card with a minimum spend of S$600 in eligible transactions each month (capped at S$80):

  • Zaobao and SPH Newspaper Subscriptions - 20% (10% + Bonus 10%)
  • BreadTalk - 12%
  • Buzz, Department Stores, Online Purchases, Dining - 10%
  • Spend in China - 5%

If anything my travels to China recently has taught me is that credit cards are generally not accepted in most places and in the event that they are, international credit cards are typically declined so you have as much luck as a Visa credit card that is issued in Singapore. The bonus 10% rebate on Zaobao and SPH Newspaper Subscriptions ends on 30 June 2018 and as I have mentioned, a minimum spend of S$600 is required. If you typically spend S$666 on BreadTalk each statement period, you are effectively looking at a cash rebate of S$79.92 which is significant. However, if you are a regular person like the rest of us, your spend in BreadTalk should be negligible. 10% cash rebate on dining and online purchases is significant and you can spend up to S$800 each month to benefit from the maximum cashback amount of S$80 but do note that is a UnionPay card - you can't even add this to PayPal.
