The 2017 Almost-Complete Guide to Mooncakes from Hotels for Mid-Autumn Festival - Singapore Mooncake Index
If you have been following me on Instagram, you would have already known that the season for mooncakes (i.e. Mid-Autumn Festival) is coming up really soon and in the spirit of good fun, I have compiled what I would like to call a Mooncake Price Index (even though if we were to be pedantic, it is inaccurate to term it as that) for 2017. What I have done is basically gone through the price lists of all the hotel mooncakes that I have tasted so far to find out what the average price (GST inclusive) per baked and snowskin mooncake is - I have included both normal-size and mini-size ones for the sake of completeness. Do note that when there are multiple prices for different flavours, the cheapest price is utilised in this calculation.

As I have mentioned earlier, it is inaccurate to call it a Mooncake Index since they are prices and they are not indexed to anything else - I wanted to create a geek version but I figured that the absolute price is probably more interesting to most people. Also, do take note that the above prices do not take into consideration any form of early bird, credit card or bulk discounts which may be applicable. From the data above, here are the average prices for a mooncake that you can get at a good hotel in 2017:
- Baked Mooncake (Regular-size) - S$16.27
- Baked Mooncake (Mini-size) - S$9.35
- Snowskin Mooncake (Regular-size) - S$15.75
- Snowskin Mooncake (Mini-size) - S$8.20
It is definitely interesting to see that a regular-size baked mooncake is only 3.3% higher in price as compared to a snowskin one but a mini-size baked mooncake is priced 14.0% higher than an equivalent-size snowskin mooncake. Without any further (strange) investigations, here are most of the mooncakes that you can get from hotels for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival 2017.
