Hotel Review: The St. Regis Singapore (Caroline Astor Suite) - Great Use of Suite Night Award
The St. Regis Singapore is one of my favourite Marriott properties in Singapore so when The Westin Singapore and the JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach reverted back into being SHN-Dedicated Facilities (SDF), I knew I had to revisit The St. Regis Singapore for a weekend staycation. My last stay at this property was back in 2019 and while I have been back on multiple occasions to dine at Yan Ting (which is a fantastic American Express Love Dining partner), I have not actually stayed on the property in a very long while.

My reservation at The St. Regis Singapore was for an Executive Deluxe (lead-in room category) and this stay came complimentary with my American Express Platinum Card - while the perks are great, the annual fee of S$1,712 each year cannot be waived. As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, I am eligible for a suite upgrade if it is available at the time of check-in, but since I have quite a few Suite Night Awards (SNAs) expiring at the end of this year, I have decided to apply it to this reservation for a guaranteed upgrade into a Caroline Astor Suite. On the morning of check-in, I received a notification via the Marriott Bonvoy app at approximately 8:00 AM, notifying me that the suite was ready for my arrival.
Since I am already a Marriott Bonvoy member who has stayed at this property previously, the whole check-in process was rather fuss-free. I had to provide the room stay voucher (an annual benefit of the American Express Platinum Card) during the check-in and I was briefed on all the new rules that were in effect since Singapore is back in Phase 2 (Heightened Alert). Essentially, dine-in is not allowed but Platinum Elite and higher tier members who are staying in-house will receive a 20% discount on in-room dining. So if you are planning to book a luxury travel advisor rate that comes with USD 100 property credit, you can really stretch that a little bit more on in-room dining during this period.
The Caroline Astor Suites at The St. Regis Singapore are corner rooms featuring approximately 90sqm of space. While most of them do face the Singapore Botanic Garden, the suite that I was assigned to faces Tanglin Shopping Centre and the Shangri-La Singapore from a distance.
One of the things that I love most about staying at The St. Regis Singapore is the 24-hour St. Regis Butler Service - all in-house guests will get to enjoy this benefit regardless of Marriott Bonvoy status level or the room type that you have booked. As a quick reminder, these are the benefits that you can enjoy when you stay at The St. Regis Singapore:
Unpacking and packing of luggage
Hot Coffee and Tea with your wake-up call, or at any time of the day
2-piece garment pressing per day, nonaccumulative
Shoeshine services
While I personally do not care for luggage packing services, the unlimited hot coffee and tea benefit is fantastic for caffeine addicts like myself. I typically like to get some work done at the drawing room or an executive lounge (if the hotel has it) but since we are in P2HA, dining-in is obviously not an option. Having all the excess space in the living room meant that I was able to convert that into a working space (with free-flowing coffee) during my stay. You can easily request these beverages via the Marriott Bonvoy app but if you would like your request to be attended to quicker, simply pick up the phone and talk to your butler directly - most of my requests were fulfilled between 10-15 minutes.
The living room of the Caroline Astor Suite is beautiful and while the layout of the entire suite is slightly odd (as this building was initially designed to be a residence), I do like the lavishness and opulence of the suite for a weekend stay. There is a plush sofa and ample seating area for up to four adults but do note that the maximum occupancy is currently two adults as Singapore is in P2HA (unless all of you are from the same household). In case you were wondering how to control the lights and curtains in the living room, there is actually a small remote near the top of the work desk - you might need to spend a few seconds figuring it out but essentially, everything should be automated.
As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, I received a handwritten welcome letter from the General Manager of The St. Regis Singapore and a box of chocolate pralines. I typically do prefer fruit bowls and fruit platters over chocolates but perhaps it is easier to coordinate pre-packaged amenities during this time. As a Platinum Elite member, my late checkout request at 4:00 PM was also accorded automatically - this is one of the main reasons why I still prefer the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program over the Hilton Honors program.
The living room of the Caroline Astor Suite comes with a leather-bound writing desk and a 42-inch LCD TV - there is also a Bose surround system which sounds great if you are watching movies but unfortunately, it does not have AirPlay so you will have to connect your devices via a cable if you would like to take advantage of it. The St. Regis Singapore was built in 2007, so signs of age are definitely starting to show. With that being said, it still looks pretty good for a property that is almost 14 years old.
Consistent with what you would expect at most luxury hotels, disposable face masks, and hand sanitiser is provided in the guest rooms at The St. Regis Singapore. High-touch surfaces are also cleaned thoroughly when a guest checks out the room so the risk of infection is moderately low. While the butlers do enter your room and suite to fulfill requests, they are all wearing masks and typically maintain a safe distance when inside the room.
As mentioned earlier, the layout of the Caroline Astor Suite is rather peculiar and the minibar is essentially the first thing you see when you enter the room - it is also located right next to the bathroom which is slightly odd. There is a huge mirror by the entrance which is great since it allows you to get dressed before heading out. I actually made use of this area to do a quick Vinyasa session since it allowed me to check on my form during my practice.
You will find a basic Nespresso machine (complete with complimentary coffee capsules) and TWG-branded teabags here in the minibar. Complimentary bottled drinking water is also provided but everything in the minibar has been cleared out due to the current situation - items can be purchased and sent up to your room if required. While I typically do appreciate the convenience of having a Nespresso machine in the room, being able to order fresh coffee and tea from a St. Regis Butler is obviously my preferred choice. If you are traveling with children or simply want a non-caffeinated option, the hot chocolate (off-menu item) is delicious!
Since Caroline Astor Suites are all corner rooms at The St. Regis Singapore, the bedrooms enjoy a greater level of privacy since they are tucked away. I am personally a very light sleeper and I am happy to share that I have had one of my best nights of sleep in a while here in the Caroline Astor Suite. I cannot quite remember whether the regular rooms enjoy the same level of soundproofing but I guess there is only one way to find out - to take full advantage of the Stay 3, Pay 2 offer that is currently ongoing at the hotel.
There is a small dressing area located on one side of the bedroom with a moveable mirror that can be adjusted to the left or right if you prefer. As you may notice, it is also possible to look into the bathroom from this dressing area - the clear glass allows natural light to enter the bathroom but obviously, it is also possible to lower the blinds for privacy (more on this later).
The Caroline Astor Suite at The St. Regis Singapore features a plush king-size bed which is quite easily one of my favourite beds in Singapore. As mentioned earlier, the location and layout of these suites also ensure that the bedroom is isolated away from ambient noise so you should get a good night’s sleep. The bedroom features a small window at the corner, where natural daylight can come in from - this is slightly atypical to most hotel rooms as the bedrooms generally enjoy a fuller window.
You will find a set of buttons that will control the lighting and blinds of the room - you can easily switch between different lighting modes for relaxation and reading with the touch of a preprogrammed button. Alternatively, you have the option of turning on and off individual lights within the room from this panel. There is also a bluetooth speaker from Geneva Lab on one of the bedside tables and pairing can be done easily so you can enjoy your favourite tunes on this speaker that packs a punch.
The Caroline Astor Suites at The St. Regis Singapore feature a walk-in wardrobe that has plenty of space for your attires. More importantly, it connects the bedroom to the bathroom of the Caroline Astor Suite and this is ingenious because it allows you get dressed after showering without needing to enter the bedroom at all. Located within the walk-in wardrobe is where you will also find things like the safe, an extra pillow (you may also request for more via the St. Regis Butler or Marriott Bonvoy app), as well as other amenities like your laundry and paper bags.
The bathroom of the Caroline Astor Suite is beautiful - it is cladded in marble and rather opulent. It also features feature French Brenche de Benou marble vanity tops with double basins. As mentioned earlier, the bathroom also looks out to the bedroom which allows for some natural light to enter. There is an automated switch located near the entrance of the bathroom (by the walk-in wardrobe) that will allow you to lower the blinds for privacy (especially if you are sharing this suite with someone else).
Bath amenities are provided by the in-house Laboratoire Remède even though there were rumours that St. Regis properties would switch these out to a different brand internationally. I personally do enjoy the current products as they feel quite premium and the scent of the body wash in particular really appeals to me. Strangely, only one set of these products are provided in the Caroline Astor Suite at The St. Regis Singapore. WIth that said, you can always ask for more via the app or a quick phone call but most suites that I have been to generally provide two sets of such products by default.
There is also a separate shower area in the bathroom which comes with a separate jet-massage shower. When I stayed at The St. Regis Singapore previously, I seem to recall that these massive mirrors located within the shower area were also self-defogging mirrors which were heated. On this stay however, I noticed that this was no longer the case - perhaps the mechanism is damaged and it hasn’t been replaced?
Located on the other end of the bathroom is a connecting door that will take you to the toilet where you will also find a separate basin. The toilet also has another sliding door that can take you directly to the living room - this is great when you have guests over and do not want them to walk through your bedroom in order to get to the bathroom.
As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, I was offered an Aperitivo Hour with a selection of two (alcoholic) beverages - one for each registered guest in the room. From my understanding, the Aperitivo Hour is typically offered at the Astor Bar for Platinum Elite and higher tier members but since Singapore is in Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), this is delivered directly to your room instead. The range of drinks that you can select from is rather limited but it is worth noting that St. Regis properties are not obliged to provide this benefit so anything that you can is really a bonus. A small plate of canapés was delivered alongside my choice of drinks between 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
As I stayed during Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), breakfast was served in-room as opposed to Brasserie Les Saveurs. Personally, I prefer this arrangement as it the quantity of food is substantial (even though some people prefer a buffet) and it also allows you to sleep-in a little without having to worry about the breakfast crowd. Your breakfast orders must be placed before 6:00 PM the day before and you can do so by scanning a QR Code (that is provided during check-in) to submit your preferences via an online form.
As far as I know, registered guests are allowed to select a main course per person but I have seen some people ordering up to two per guest so you might have to check with the property if you typically enjoy more food. I personally thought that the serving size was huge (even though I have only ordered one main course per person) and had trouble finishing it. The pastry items that came with the breakfast were all done beautifully and I really enjoyed them. Most importantly, the delivery of breakfast was also done in a timely manner - just three minutes into the timeslot that I have selected the day before.
I have really enjoyed my stay at The St. Regis Singapore and I have actually gone ahead to book a three-night stay at this property. There is currently a Stay 3, Pay 2 offer under the Marriott STARS program which you can access via ClassicTravel.com (for free) or HotelLux (paid annual membership) which brings the cost for a three-night stay down to approximately S$800-S$1,000 for most stays in August/September 2021. I will not go too much into detail about such Luxury Travel Advisor Rates but for those who are chasing points and loyalty statuses, these rates are also elite-qualifying which means you will continue to enjoy your elite benefits while earning points and nights in the Marriott Bonvoy program.
Being able to enjoy unlimited coffees and teas using the St. Regis Butler service during my stay has also been delightful since I typically consume quite a bit of coffee when trying to get work done. Now the only question that remains is this - should I use three of my Suite Night Awards on my upcoming three-night stay at The St. Regis Singapore, or should I roll the suite-upgrade dice?

TRIBE Living Bangkok Sukhumvit 39 is a great value choice for budget-conscious travelers but its slightly longer walk from Phrom Phong BTS Station may make it less convenient compared to more accessible (but pricier) options in the area.
