How to Save Money on Uber Rides - Get S$3 off UberPOOL Rides via ShopBack!
Uber has changed the way we get around on a day to day basis. While the train is the primary mode of transport for most Singaporeans, there are instances and occasions where a car ride makes a lot more sense because you are rushing for time or simply want a more comfortable journey. If you do use Uber on a very regular basis like me, there are a few things that you can do to save money on these rides - many of which do not require you to do much and simply take an additional second or two to save you money in the long run!

1. Use ShopBack to get CashBack Everyday!
One of the things that I have always advocated the use of ShopBack - it does not matter whether you are chasing miles or simply collecting cashback, ShopBack will benefit you regardless of what your goal is as it is an additional perk that you get on top of your credit card spend. If you do not already have an account, click HERE to sign-up for one now and get S$5 bonus credit. While the main purpose of this article is to focus on Uber savings, ShopBack can be used as a shopping companion to your everyday purchases online - get cashback for shopping, food deliveries, vacation plans and transport just to name a few! With ShopBack, you can earn $0.20 for the first Uber ride you take each day and while it does not sound like much, this is an additional S$73 cashback in a year (money that costs you nothing to earn) if you take a ride everyday!
2. Promo Codes - Get S$3 off UberPOOL!
It is not uncommon to see both public and targeted Uber promo codes - make sure you check your email account for emails that contain these promo codes. There is usually at least one available each week and in some instances, these promo codes stack on top of each other - I have taken 20-minute car rides and paid less than S$4 for them before! It has been a year since Uber was made available on ShopBack to help you save on your daily transport and in celebration of that, ShopBack is offering S$3 off UberPOOL rides over the next three weeks (limited to one redemption per week per account). Here are the promo codes that you have to enter in order to get S$3 off your first UberPOOL ride in each period:
- 12-18 June 2017: SB3POOL
- 19-25 June 2017: SB3POOL2
- 26-30 June 2017: SB3POOL3
3. Use the Right Credit Card
My favourite topic is obviously on credit cards and while it is not secret that my obsession for miles and elite status is a primary concern, there are various ways to save more (or earn more!) on your Uber rides. Assuming that miles accrual is your primary goal (and I do applaud you for that), the best credit card to use on your Uber account is no doubt the DBS Woman's World MasterCard - you do not have to be a woman to apply! Every S$5 on Uber that you charge to your DBS Woman's World MasterCard will earn you 20 DBS Points which you can then convert into KrisFlyer miles at a 1:1 ratio. Assuming that you spend only S$15 on Uber each day on average, you can potentially earn up to 21,900 KrisFlyer Miles (this is more than enough to fly you from Singapore to Bali on Singapore Airlines Business Class!) each year by just charging it to the right credit card.
Alternatively, if you prefer getting instant gratification on cashback credit cards instead, the SingPost Platinum Visa Credit Card offers up to 7% cashback each month on eligible online purchases (with a minimum spend of S$600 each statement cycle). Additionally, you will also benefit from a 20% cashback (capped at S$50 per month) on all eligible Uber rides (in Singapore and overseas) when you charge your rides to an eligible Standard Chartered Credit Card. Be sure to register your Standard Chartered Credit Card into your Uber app by entering the promo code 'SC2016SG'.
4. LiveUp Membership
The least known method to save on Uber rides is probably the LiveUp Membership - this is a paid membership but there is a 60-day free trial (following which an annual fee of S$28.80 will be charged for the first year) and it comes with a range of benefits like 6-months access to Netflix as well as rebate on RedMart and Lazada purchases. One of the other benefits that you get with this LiveUp membership is S$10 off every 10th Uber ride that you take (limited to 12 times a year). Remember, even rides that are discounted using promo codes (mentioned above) count towards fulfilling this requirement.
