American Express Unveils New Card Face for Platinum Credit Card - Get 65,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points With Welcome Offer

The American Express Platinum Credit Card has a new card face and it comes with an impressive welcome offer for eligible new card members approved by 30 June 2020 - simply spend a total of S$12,000 in the first six months of card membership to receive up to 65,000 bonus Membership Rewards (MR) Points (on top of the base earn rate).

American Express currently issues three different Platinum cards - while The American Express Platinum Credit Card may be the 'lowest-tier' card with the lowest annual fee (as opposed to The Platinum Card which commands an annual fee of S$1,712), many of the benefits that are found in the higher-tier cards can be enjoyed with this credit card.

Welcome Bonus - Get 65,000 Bonus MR Points

In order to trigger the full 65,000 bonus MR points on The American Express Platinum Credit Card, you will have to apply via a referral link (feel free to use mine or ask an existing cardholder to refer you) and spend a total of S$6,000 within the first 6 months of your card membership (split across two periods). As mentioned earlier, these bonus MR points are issued on top of the base earn rate (which is not great but the welcome bonus helps to make up for it). In order to trigger the Welcome Bonus, you must not be an existing American Express Platinum Credit Card Member enrolled in other campaigns.

1. Apply for The American Express Platinum Credit Card via Referral Link and Spend S$1,000 in First 3 Months of Card Membership - 15,000 Bonus MR Points

Applying for The American Express Platinum Credit Card using a referral link (all of the links in the article are eligible) will get you an additional 15,000 bonus MR Points when you spend S$1,000 within the first 3 months of card membership. If you were to apply for the card directly on American Express without going through a referral, you will not receive these bonus points (so make sure you help a friend out and gain some in the process - it is a win-win situation for members).

2. Spend S$6,000 in First 3 Months of Card Membership - 25,000 Bonus MR Points

If you are an eligible new member for The American Express Platinum Credit Card, you will be able to benefit from the rather generous welcome bonus. Simply spend S$6,000 in the first 3 months of card membership to receive 25,000 bonus MR points - this bonus stacks with the referral bonus on top so if you sign-up for the card using my referral link for the Platinum Credit Card, you will receive 40,000 bonus MR points in total for simply spending S$6,000 in the first 3 months.

3. Spend S$6,000 in Next 3 Months of Card Membership (Months 4 to 6) - 25,000 Bonus MR Points

In the second period of the welcome offer (months 4 to 6 of your card membership), you will also receive 25,000 bonus MR points if you spend another S$6,000 in this period. By simply spending a total of S$12,000 in the first 6 months of your card membership, you can unlock 65,000 bonus MR points on top of the base earn rate (2 MR Points per S$1.60) - you can also consider Platinum EXTRA Partners to earn 10 MR Points per S$1.60 to really get the most points for your spend.

Converting Membership Rewards (MR) Points to Miles

MR Points earned on The American Express Platinum Credit Card can be converted into miles at a rate of 450:250 - this means that your 65,000 bonus MR points can be converted into 36,111 miles approximately. Since The American Express Platinum Credit Card offers a base earn rate of 2 MR points per S$1.60, you will be able to earn 15,000 MR points (equivalent to 8,333 miles) from spending S$12,000. Getting 80,000 MR points (inclusive of the welcome bonuses) from spending S$12,000 in the first 6 months of your card membership nets you a rather desirable earn rate of 3.7 miles per dollar. Alternatively, if you put that S$12,000 spend towards an American Express Platinum EXTRA Partner, you will be able to earn a total of 140,000 MR Points (65,000 from the welcome offer and 75,000 from Platinum EXTRA Partners) - this gives you an earn rate of 6.48 miles per dollar for the first S$12,000 spent.
