Malaysia to Introduce Tourism Tax for Tourist Stays - up to RM20 per Room per Night!
Malaysia will be introducing a brand new variable Tourism Tax from 01 August 2017 for all eligible accommodation products consumed by tourists in Malaysia. This Tourism Tax is variable and dependent on the ratings of the hotel or accommodation that the tourist has decided to consume - it ranges from RM2.50 to RM20 per room per night.

Regardless of whether the tourist is a Malaysian national or otherwise, all tourists who satisfy another one of the following purposes will be subjected to this Tourism Tax:
- Pleasure, recreation or holiday
- Culture
- Religion
- Visiting friends or relatives
- Sports
- Business
- Meetings, conferences, seminars or conventions;
- Studies or research
- Any other purpose which is not related to an occupation that is remunerated from the place visited
