Upcoming Change to UOB Preferred Platinum Visa Card - Earning 4 Miles per Dollar on Contactless Transactions (from 22 May 2020)

The UOB Preferred Platinum Visa (PPV) Card is one of the best credit cards in Singapore for collecting miles - there are only a handful of credit cards that give you 4 miles per dollar and this one of them. This card awards 20 miles per S$5 (equivalent to 4 mpd) on all eligible contactless transactions each month (for the first S$1,000 officially each statement month) but starting from 22 May 2020, you will need to add this card into your digital mobile wallet in order to continue earning miles at this rate.

Now to put things simply, things are probably not going to change for you - you will still earn 20 miles per S$5 (equivalent to 4 mpd) on all eligible digital contactless transactions (i.e. Apple Pay or Google Pay) on your UOB PPV Card. You will only not get the bonus miles if you take your physical credit card out to tap on a terminal (something that most of us are probably already not doing). According to the latest terms and conditions, mobile contactless transactions are defined by UOB as - you will continue to earn 10X UNI$ (or 4 mpd) via the following contactless payment methods:

  • Apple Pay

  • Fitbit Pay

  • Google Pay

  • Android Pay

  • UOB Mighty

As a recap, the UOB PPV Card will allow you to continue earning 10 UNI$ per S$5 (equivalent to a total of 20 miles, or 4 mpd) on mobile contactless payments from 22 May 2020 so long payment is not made to a merchant that offers SMART$ rebates. I mentioned that the card allows you to earn 4 miles per dollar for the first S$1,000 of eligible contactless transactions that you charge to it each statement month but the actual way that UOB calculates this is a little perculiar - 9 UNI$ (equivalent to 18 miles) are awarded per S$5 and cardholders can earn up to 2,000 bonus UNI$ each month so effectly, you can earn 10X UNI$ on the first S$1,110 (rounded down from S$1,111 to the lowest S$5 block) that you spend on your card each month.
