Confirmed - American Express Platinum Members Earn 3.91 Miles per Dollar (And Enjoy Platinum Travel Insurance) on Singapore Airlines Group Bookings (until 20 July 2020)

Approximately three weeks ago, I wrote about the Double Rewards campaign that American Express is running for Centurion and Platinum members - something that members in some other markets are seeing as well. As part of this campaign, members will receive double the number of Membership Rewards points for all eligible expenses made during the promotional period.

Typically, holders of The Platinum Card receive 5 Membership Rewards points (approx. 1.95 mpd) for each full S$1.60 that they spend on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and/or Scoot (directly or through an official channel like The Platinum Concierge and the American Express Travel Online). Under the Double Rewards campaign, Platinum members will earn 10 Membership Rewards points (approx. 3.91 mpd) for each full S$1.60 that they charge to this category. I have recently made a S$1,362.59 transaction on Singapore Airlines and can confirm that this transaction is indeed earning 10 Membership Rewards points per S$1.60 (3.91 mpd).

Where you really get your money's worth (at least when you are trying to justify that S$1,712 annual fee) is through the International Airline Program (IAP) where you typically get to enjoy 10-15% savings on selected carriers (including Singapore Airlines!) in First and Business Class. More importantly, purchasing your air tickets using The Platinum Card will provide comprehensive worldwide travel insurance for you and your immediate family. If you are booking the tickets for you and your legal spouse, both of you will be covered (so long you are between the ages of 18 and 80). If you do have a dependent child who is 23 years old and below, he/she will also be covered on commencement of each Period of Insurance. All you have to do is to charge the travel cost for your return ticket to The Platinum Card. The Platinum Travel Insurance offers pretty decent 'baseline' coverage (it does excel in certain areas) but I personally hold an annual travel insurance plan since I do travel quite a bit (maybe not so much now with the COVID-19 situation).
